Abstract and Still-life pictures can add an exciting new dimension to your photography.
At this meeting, we looked at different techniques that allow creativity run free, focussing on simple and inexpensive ways to create great photographs.
We explored lighting, composition and movement to show ways to produce some very unique and exciting results, providing an opportunity to play with our camera on those rainy days when going outside isn’t so appealing.

1) Sue London – Captured magazine
Sue – a Media Consultant at THN Media – provided the group useful information on how to contribute to the local CAPTURED magazine. This is a great opportunity to take pictures of local events and promote our group, both collectively and/or individually. Sue is looking for photographers who are reliable, proficient in managing their time, and who can work with tight deadlines.
- Pictures can be vertical or horizontal
- Pictures must be saved as JPEG files
- Pictures caption: People are mentioned by their first name only, in the order they appear on the photograph.

2) Hans Voorberg – Abstract and Still-life Photography
Hans took the audience through a series of captivating pictures, showing his passion for abstract close-up photography. Using simple and inexpensive equipment, he experiments with fire, smoke, colour, negative space and ICM (intentional Camera Movement).
Hans provided insight on each photo he presented. He also brought some props to illustrate several of his techniques and the importance of light.
Basic equipment:
– Camera
– Tripod
– Flash with wireless remote
– Table lined with various construction paper
– Some subjects: Nature
– Smoke from incense sticks
– Dipped fruit in clear carbonated water
– Wine glasses (empty or not)
3) Michael Groves – A taste of Ireland
Michael shared selected pictures from three trips he took to Ireland. Green pastures, old ruins, narrow streets and pubs were only a few highlights of his extensive travel across the island. With his humorous narrative, Michael provided a lot of fun and historical facts, making his presentation most captivating.
