Iceland: Realm of Ice and Fire – Notes from July 25, 2018

Post Series: Notes from Other Meetings

Mark Williams, an award-winning Nature Photographer set out on an epic journey to explore, discover and document his Iceland adventure along the Hringvegur (“Ring Road”), a 1,400 km journey around the island realm of ice and fire.

What is the ring road, you might ask?
Per Wikipedia, the Ring Road is a national road in Iceland that runs around the island and connects most of the inhabited parts of the country. The total length of the road is 1,332 kilometres (828 mi).

Meeting Minutes

Date: July 25, 2018
Attendance: 34

Featured Speaker – Mark Williams: Lords of the Ring – The Realm of Ice and Fire

Mark started by sharing with the group many interesting insights on his trip to Iceland, followed by a 30-minute presentation of stunning pictures and video clips.

Armed with his Fuji equipment and four 64GB cards, Mark started his 10-day journey on March 28, 2018 (together with his brother) and covered most of the island along the Ring Road.

Day 1 – Arriving in Reykjavik
Day 2 – Reykjavik to Grundarfjörður (Brak’s Monument)
Day 3 – Visit Grundarfjörður
Day 4 – Grundarfjörður to Akureyri
Day 5 – Visit Húsavík
Day 6 – Húsavík to Egilsstadir
Day 7 – Egilsstadir to Höfn
Day 8 – Höfn to Vik
Day 9 – Visit Vik
Day 10 – Back to Reykjavik

Lodging: Mark opted for AirBnB accommodations, allowing him to meet with the locals and enjoying a more “personal” visit.

Also worth mentioning: if time and budget are an issue, a shorter trip (3-4 days) along the “Golden Circle” route is also very scenic.

When preparing for his trip, Mark consulted the map and travel guide (ebook) from international-photographer.com, which he highly recommended.
